Bukhara, Uzbekistan is a great place to visit. There are many historical buildings and many interesting workshops based in the old town. One of my favourite workshops I visited was a metalworks studio. There, they make knives, shears, padlocks, and many more unique items. The craftsmanship is beautiful, and you can be sure you will not to find anything quite like it anywhere else! All items are handmade in the workshop by experienced hands, and all visitors have the opportunity to watch them work. The manufacturing process is very skilful and precise. The knives for example, are extremely sharp, and do not need to be sharpened at a later date. They are certainly items to last a lifetime! I purchased a dainty pair of gold plated shears (about the size of nail scissors). They may be small, but they have the capability of cutting through many materials; such as tin, very easily. I myself, will just be using them for my vast sewing projects! The padlocks are also extremely intricate and make very durable souvenirs - adding a bit of weight to your luggage at the same time! The designs reflect the local culture and history, and would look amazing in the home.
So if you are planning to head to Uzbekistan (and especially Bukhara), please make time to visit the metal workshops. They are truly amazing places of craft and culture!
