Among all the other beautiful treasures of Bukhara, there is an art form demonstrating the highest level of precision and devotion - Miniature painting.
This art form has been popular in Uzbekistan for hundreds of years. Masters teach their apprentices the required skills to produce intricate, colourful and traditional designs. It takes many years and a lot of practise before becoming a master. It can take decades!
The designs are often religious and demonstrate the many different types of Arabic calligraphy. The paper base of the paintings is old silk paper taken from ancient books. This provides a beautiful matt base for the vibrant colours of gouache which are finely applied. Often the artist will need to use a magnifier glass to aid in applying the delicate brush strokes.
The blue pigments are especially stunning to me. That intense lapis lazuli blue is mesmerising. It is a strong reminder of the beautiful mosaics on the ancient buildings and mosques of Uzbekistan. I love the colours of this silk road country!
There are a handful of dedicated miniature painting studios in the centre of ‘Old Town’ Bukhara. The studio walls all display the detailed works finished by the masters and which are available to purchase. It is difficult to choose! All the art works are breathtaking!
Visiting these studios has also inspired me to take up my pencil and paint brush again! My inspiration has strongly been influenced by the silk road and Central Asia. I look forward to showcasing my own work soon!
But in the meantime I hope you take a closer look at the miniature paintings of Uzbekistan.
